ABSTRACT The piramutaba, Brachyplatystoma vaillantii is a freshwater catfish that is the most abundant fishery resource in the Amazon estuary. Piramutaba trawling is done on industrial fishing scale and is characterized by the presence of many freshwater and marine bycatch species, with and without commercial value. Here we describe the bycatch of the industrial fishery of piramutaba in the Amazon estuary and evaluate the relationship of two important environmental factors, depth and salinity, with the accidental capture of freshwater and marine fishes in the Amazon estuary in the rainy and dry seasons. We identified 21 cartilaginous fish species (19.1% freshwater and 80.9% marine) and 125 bony fish species (25.6% freshwater and 74.4% marine). The bycatch included 64 species without commercial value (43% of all bycatch species), which are always discarded. Freshwater and estuarine fishes exhibited significantly higher abundances in shallower environments, while marine fishes were similarly abundant along the entire depth gradient. On the contrary, the abundance of freshwater fishes significantly decreased, and that of estuarine and marine fishes significantly increased with increasing salinity. Regarding the conservation status of the bycatch species, one is classified as vulnerable (VU), and seven as critically endangered (CR). The information on the bycatch of piramutaba fishery in the Amazon estuary is important to subsidize regional fisheries policies and the management of protected areas.

RESUMO A piramutaba, Brachyplatystoma vaillantii é um bagre de água doce que representa o recurso pesqueiro mais abundante no estuário amazônico. O arrasto da piramutaba é feito em escala industrial, caracterizado pela presença de muitas espécies de água doce e marinha capturadas de forma incidental, com e sem valor comercial. Aqui descrevemos a captura incidental da pesca industrial de piramutaba no estuário amazônico e avaliamos a relação de dois fatores ambientais, profundidade e salinidade, com a captura incidental de espécies de água doce e marinhas nas estações chuvosa e seca. Identificamos 21 espécies de peixes cartilaginosos (19,1% de água doce e 80,9% marinhos) e 125 espécies de peixes ósseos (25,6% de água doce e 74,4% marinhos). A captura incidental incluiu 64 espécies sem valor comercial (43% de todas as espécies capturadas) que sempre são descartadas. Os peixes de água doce e estuarinos exibiram abundâncias significativamente maiores em ambientes mais rasos, enquanto os peixes marinhos foram igualmente abundantes ao longo de todo o gradiente de profundidade. Inversamente, a abundância de peixes de água doce diminuiu significativamente, e a de peixes estuarinos e marinhos aumentou significativamente em salinidades maiores. Em relação ao estado de conservação das espécies capturadas, uma é reconhecida como vulnerável (VU) e sete como criticamente ameaçadas (CR). As informações sobre a captura incidental da pesca da piramutaba no estuário amazônico são fundaentais para subsidiar políticas pesqueiras regionais e gestão de áreas protegidas.

RESUMO Variações ambientais afetam a disponibilidade de recursos espaciais e tróficos em igarapés amazônicos e podem ser fatores importantes estruturando a dieta de peixes. Analisamos a composição da dieta e a amplitude de nicho trófico do lebiasinídeo Copella arnoldi, tendo como objetivo avaliar como a variação ambiental em igarapés amazônicos afeta o nicho trófico da espécie. Indivíduos foram capturados e fatores ambientais foram medidos em 20 igarapés da Floresta Nacional de Caxiuanã, na Amazônia Oriental, em Novembro de 2010. Fizemos uma análise semi-quantitativa do conteúdo estomacal de 200 indivíduos. Copella arnoldi apresentou uma dieta onívora composta predominantemente por detritos e invertebrados alóctones. A variação ambiental (largura e profundidade do igarapé, cobertura de dossel e correnteza) não afetaram a composição da dieta ou a amplitude de nicho trófico da espécie, possivelmente devido à integridade regional da floresta na área protegida. A cobertura ripária provavelmente minimiza os efeitos da variação ambiental nos recursos tróficos, levando, assim, a uma dieta localmente homogênea de C. arnoldi.

ABSTRACT Environmental variation affects the availability of spatial and trophic resources in Amazonian streams and may be important factors structuring the diet of fishes. We analyzed the diet composition and trophic niche breadth of the lebiasinid splash tetra, Copella arnoldi, aiming to evaluate how environmental variation in Amazonian streams affects the species’ trophic niche. Fish were captured and environmental factors were recorded in 20 streams in the Caxiuanã National Forest, in the eastern Amazon, in November 2010. We made a semi-quantitative analysis of stomach contents of 200 individuals. Copella arnoldi exhibited an omnivorous diet composed mainly of detritus and allochthonous invertebrates. Environmental variation (stream width, stream depth, canopy cover and flow) did not affect the diet composition or trophic niche breadth of the species, possibly due to the regional integrity of the forest within the boundaries of the protected area. Riparian cover probably minimizes the effect of the small-scale variations in food resources, thus leading to a locally homogeneous diet composition in the splash tetra C. arnoldi.

RESUMO Variações espaciais e temporais em habitats de riachos promovem grandes flutuações na disponibilidade de recursos, afetando assim a dieta dos peixes. Avaliamos os efeitos dos períodos hidrológicos e da ordem do riacho em cada período na dieta do tetra Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus. Analisamos 160 estômagos em oito riachos variando de 1ª a 3ª ordem entre o período de seca e cheia. Todos os riachos foram amostrados em uma área bem preservada na Amazônia Oriental. O tetra é onívoro com tendência à insetivoria. Durante o período seco, a espécie exibiu maior quantidade de itens autóctones do que itens alóctones. Os peixes consumiram mais itens alóctones nos riachos de 1ª e 2ª ordem no período de seca e nos riachos de 1ª e 3ª ordem no período de cheia. Esses resultados refletem as interações entre fatores temporais e longitudinais na disponibilidade de recursos e sua influência na dieta de peixes. Este padrão é provavelmente dependente da extensa vegetação ripária como fonte direta e indireta de alimento para peixes de riachos.

ABSTRACT Spatial and temporal variations in streams promote large fluctuations of resource availability, thus affecting the diet of fishes. We evaluated the effects of hydrological periods and stream order within periods on the diet of the flag tetra Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus. We analyzed 160 stomachs in eight streams ranging from 1st to 3rd order between dry and flood period. Sampled streams belonged to a well-preserved area in the Eastern Amazon. The flag tetra is omnivorous, with a tendency towards insectivory. During the dry period, the species exhibited a higher amount of autochthonous than allochthonous items. Fish consumed more allochthonous items in 1st and 2nd order streams in the dry period and in 1st and 3rd order streams in the flood period. These results reflect the interactions between temporal and longitudinal factors on resource availability and its influence on fish diet. This pattern is probably dependent on the extensive riparian vegetation as a direct and indirect source of food for stream fish.

Resumo A medicalização de nomes populares de plantas medicinais é o processo de substituição de nomes populares nativos por nomes de medicamentos comerciais, princípios ativos ou sua indicação terapêutica empregados pela biomedicina moderna. Aparentemente, este processo se intensificou no início dos anos 2000, visto que houve um aumento na quantidade desses nomes em pesquisas etnocientíficas realizadas em comunidades locais no Brasil. Nosso objetivo foi delinear as origens desse processo. Foram revisados dados da “literatura cinza” pré-1980, incluindo 15 livros, compêndios, dicionários e guias de plantas medicinais. Mercúrio e suas corruptelas lexicais foram os únicos nomes medicalizados encontrados antes dos anos 1980. Isso se deve provavelmente ao antigo uso de mercúrio por vários sistemas médicos durante a história humana, inclusive pelos boticários no Brasil desde o século XVII. Além disso, Mercurocromo era uma marca brasileira de antisséptico que provavelmente influenciou o emprego medicalizado do nome mercúrio no passado. As combinações de “Mercúrio” e com epítetos “naturais,” como “Mercúrio-vegetal” e “Mercúrio-do-campo,” podem ser a forma original medicalizada de se nomear plantas medicinais no Brasil.

Abstract Medicalization of common names of medicinal plants is a process that involves replacing popular native names by trademarked names of drugs, active principles or therapeutic indications used by modern biomedicine. In Brazil, this process seems to have been intensified in the early 2000s due to the increasing use of those names in ethnoscientific surveys in local communities. In this study, we aimed to trace the origins of that process. For this purpose, we reviewed data from the “grey literature” pre-1980, including 15 books, compendia, dictionaries, and guides of medicinal plants. Mercury and its lexical changes were the only medicalized names found in the literature before the 1980s. This is probably due to the ancient use of mercury in several medical systems through human history, including by Brazilian apothecaries since the seventeenth century. Moreover, Mercurochrome was the name of a Brazilian trademark of antiseptic that probably influenced the use of medicalized names of mercury in the past. The name “Mercury” and its “natural” epithet combinations, like “Mercúrio-vegetal” (Mercury-plant) and “Mercúrio-do-campo” (Field-mercury), could have been the original medicalized way of naming medicinal plants in Brazil.

RESUMOA partilha de recursos é importante para a coexistência das espécies. Aquelas com ecomorfologia similar tem alto potencial competitivo, especialmente quando próximas filogeneticamente, devido ao conservantismo do nicho. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a partilha de recursos entre populações de duas espécies de lebiasinídeos (Copella nigrofasciata e Pyrrhulina aff. brevis) que coocorrem em um igarapé amazônico de primeira ordem, analisando a ecologia trófica, estratégias alimentares e atributos ecomorfológicos relacionados ao uso de recursos alimentares e espaciais. Os peixes foram capturados em maio e setembro/2010. O conteúdo estomacal de 60 indivíduos foi analisado e os itens quantificados volumetricamente para caracterizar a ecologia trófica das espécies. Foram medidos 11 atributos morfológicos, combinados em nove índices ecomorfológicos. As espécies apresentaram dieta onívora-invertívora com predomínio de itens alóctones, tendência ao generalismo e variação intrapopulacional no uso de recursos alimentares. A sobreposição de nicho trófico foi alta, mas diferiu entre os períodos, sendo baixa na chuva e alta na estiagem. Na última foi assimétrica, pois a dieta de C. nigrofasciata se sobrepôs à de P. aff. brevis, que reduziu seu espectro alimentar. A análise ecomorfológica diferenciou as espécies, indicando que C. nigrofasciata apresenta maior capacidade natatória (maior Comprimento Relativo do Pedúnculo Caudal) do que P.aff. brevis, que apresenta maior manobrabilidade e tendência a habitar ambientes lênticos (maior Altura Relativa do Corpo). Estes resultados demonstram que as espécies têm ecologia trófica semelhante e sugerem uma segregação espacial, dada por diferenças morfológicas relacionadas à locomoção e ocupação de hábitat, favorecendo sua coexistência.

ABSTRACTResource partitioning is important for species coexistence. Species with similar ecomorphology are potential competitors, especially when phylogenetically close, due to niche conservatism. The aim of this study was to investigate the resource partitioning among populations of two species of lebiasinids (Copella nigrofasciata and Pyrrhulina aff. brevis) that co-occur in a first-order Amazonian stream, analyzing the trophic ecology, feeding strategies and ecomorphological attributes related to the use of food and space by these species. Fish were captured in May and September 2010. The stomach contents of 60 individuals were analyzed and quantified volumetrically to characterize the feeding ecology of both species. Eleven morphological attributes were measured in 20 specimens and combined in nine ecomorphological indices. Both species had an omnivorous-invertivorous diet and consumed predominantly allochthonous items. Both showed a tendency to a generalist diet, but intrapopulational variation in resource use was also detected. Overall feeding niche overlap was high, but differed between seasons: low during the rainy season and high in the dry season. In the latter, the food niche overlap was asymmetric because C. nigrofasciata consumed several prey of P. aff. brevis, which reduced its food spectrum. The ecomorphological analysis suggests that C. nigrofasciatahas greater swimming capacity (greater relative length of caudal peduncle) than P. aff. brevis, which has greater maneuverability and tendency to inhabit lentic environments (greater relative depth of the body). Our results demonstrate that these species have similar trophic ecology and suggest a spatial segregation, given by morphological differences related to locomotion and occupation of habitat, favoring their coexistence.

Identificamos padrões ecomorfológicos que refletem a ecologia de espécies encontradas em poças de maré na Zona Costeira Amazônica (ZCA). Indivíduos de 19 espécies foram coletados no estado do Pará durante duas expedições em 2011. Foram estabelecidas dominância, grau de residência, guildas tróficas e tomadas medidas morfométricas de até 10 indivíduos de cada espécie. Calculou-se 23 atributos ecomorfológicos relacionados à locomoção, posição e forrageio, utilizados para o cálculo da distância ecomorfológica. Foram utilizadas Análises de Componentes Principais (PCA) para avaliar que atributos ecomorfológicos explicaram a variação entre as espécies. O teste de Mantel foi utilizado para testar a correlação da distância taxonômica com a morfologia das espécies e um teste de Mantel parcial para avaliar a correlação das guildas tróficas com os padrões ecomorfológicos, controlando-se o efeito da distância taxonômica entre as espécies. Nas análises formaram-se dois eixos principais para variação em relação aos padrões de locomoção, correlacionados à largura do pedúnculo caudal e formato da nadadeira anal, ocorrendo influência da distância taxonômica entre as espécies nos padrões ecomorfológicos. Espécies dominantes e residentes apresentaram menor capacidade de natação contínua. Quanto à posição na coluna d'água, formaram-se dois eixos principais da variação, correlacionados à posição do olho, área da nadadeira pélvica e formato do corpo, ocorrendo influência da distância taxônomica entre as espécies nas dissimilaridades morfológicas. A PCA agrupou espécies de hábito pelágico com espécies de hábito bentônico. Em relação ao forrageio, formaram-se dois eixos principais da variação, correlacionados ao tamanho da boca, tamanho do olho e comprimento do trato digestório. Espécies de diferentes guildas permaneceram agrupadas, sugerindo fraca relação da morfologia com o forrageio e não houve influência da distância taxonômica nas dissimilaridades nas guildas tróficas. Espécies residentes e dominantes em poças de maré na ZCA apresentam hábito sedentário, ocorrendo pouca influência da distância taxonômica nos padrões ecomorfológicos que se referem à posição na coluna d'água e locomoção, demonstrando que espécies distantes filogeneticamente podem apresentar padrões ecomorfológicos similares, e a morfologia demonstrou-se como fraca preditora das táticas de forrageio.

The present study was based on the identification of the ecomorphological patterns that characterize the fish species found in tide pools in the Amazonian Coastal Zone (ACZ) in the Pará State, Brazil. Representatives of 19 species were collected during two field campaigns in 2011. The dominance, residence status, and trophic guild of each species were established, and morphometric data were obtained for up to 10 specimens of each species. A total of 23 ecomorphological attributes related to locomotion, position in the water column, and foraging behavior were calculated for the analysis of ecomorphological distance. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was utilized for the evaluation of ecomorphological attributes that explained the variation among species. Mantel Test was used to correlate the taxonomic distance with species' morphological patterns and a partial Mantel Test to analyze the correlation among trophic guilds and ecomorphological patterns, controlling the effects of taxonomic distance among species. The analyses revealed two principal axes of the variation related to locomotion, correlated with the width of the caudal peduncle and the shape of the anal fin, as well as the influence of taxonomic distance on the ecomorphological characteristics of the different species. The dominant and resident species both presented a reduced capacity for continuous swimming. The two principal axes identified in relation to the position of the fish in the water column were correlated with the position of the eyes, the area of the pelvic fin, and body shape, with evidence of the influence of taxonomic distance on the morphology of the species. PCA grouped species with pelagic habits with benthonic ones. In the case of foraging behavior, the two principal axes formed by the analysis correlated with the size of the mouth, eye size, and the length of the digestive tract. Species of different guilds were grouped together, indicating a weak relationship between morphology and foraging behavior, and no relationship was found with taxonomic distance. The resident and dominant species in the tide pools of the ACZ present sedentary habits, with little evidence of the influence of taxonomic distance on the use of habitats or morphology, which was a poor indicator of foraging strategies, and showing that phylogenetically distant species could present similar ecomorphological patterns.
